British Extends Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Advisory List with Eleven Destinations
The UK government has placed 11 more countries to its public advisory roster about the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol contamination.
Just last month, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to a number of notable cases like the tragic loss of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can cause vision loss or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?
Methanol is a harmful industrial alcohol commonly used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not designed for human consumption.
While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of beverages, reputable manufacturers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the refining procedure.
Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.
Official Guidance for Travellers
Government minister Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.
"If you're having drinks in foreign countries, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or free shots," the official warned.
"Should anything appears suspicious, such as a hangover that's far more intense than typical or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention right away."
The entire list of nations noted as presenting a danger of methanol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
